Dissertation Topic
Anne-Lise Dall’Agnola, Harmed Forces. Engaging one’s body through military service in France and the United States nowadays, Supervised by Dominique Memmi.
Summary:
“Empty sleeves” and “gueules cassées” (lit. “broken faces” or “broken gargoyles”), haunting figures of war violence, are often thought to belong to the past. But today societies continue to receive home service men and women affected by disfiguring injuries. However, the public image of the military, nature of warfare, and armed forces demographics, have changed, along with the societies for whom they fight. By comparing how war-injured soldiers are viewed by French and American societies since the turn of the 21st century, I intend to reveal the social stakes behind their sacrifice. To what extent and under which circumstances is it today socially acceptable to jeopardize one’s body for the Homeland?
Keywords : military sociology, comparative sociology, disfigurement, stigma, disabled veterans.
