Julia Descamps, "Usages et expériences du regroupement familial en migration. Entre encadrement institutionnel et reconfigurations pratiques de l’intimité familiale des maisonnées immigrées", thèse en préparation à l’Université Paris 8, sous la direction de Yasmine Siblot (Cresppa-CSU, direction principale) et de Cris Beauchemin (INED, co-direction).

"Family immigration" is the main motive for granting residence permits in France today. Since the 1970s, family reunification procedures have evolved considerably. Combining quantitative analysis and ethnographic fieldwork, my PhD thesis focusses on how family immigration is shaped by these family reunification procedures. My research aims to highlight how the institutional sphere penetrates the domestic sphere in the context of family migration. I study the impact of the immigrants’ legal status on the transnational households and biographical trajectories. I seek to understand the relationships of immigrant families to the State and to migration administrations, by studying their everyday practice of the paperwork and their practical knowledge of law and migration policies. Finally, I study how family reunification policies transform, strengthen, or disrupt transnational families and their kinship ties, in practice.
