Gender in Arts Criticism

Lundi 16 et mardi 17 novembre 2015, site Pouchet du CNRS

International Conference organizes by : Marie Buscatto, IDHES, Mary Leontsini, Université d’Athènes et Delphine Naudier, CSU-Cresppa

Conference organized in the scope of the CNRS PICS Programme, with the help of the DHES (Paris1 - CNRS) and the CSU-CRESPPA, (Paris 8 - CNRS) Research Centers

Presentation

The objective of this conference is to analyse the gendered dimensions of art criticism in Western countries. Drawing on results based on empirical research in various art worlds, we would like to further analyse the role of art critics in the making of artistic careers and artistic taste from a gender perspective. We will also try to identify ways in which arts critics themselves participate in the recognition process or whether they transgress and challenge the gendered order of artworks and artistic careers. Last, but not least, we would like to emphasise the gendered dimensions that interfere in the making of arts critics as a professional group.
